Among other things we also started talking music, the other day at our dinner table.
Gharana, he said, was a style of playing a few instruments. And the masters playing those 'few' instruments were honoured with the title 'Ustad'.
Someone asked 'what does ustad mean?'.
There was a Punjabi sitting beside me and almost instantaneously, I turned across to asked him what it meant.
'Guru', he replied.
'and Pandit?', i asked.
'dekh, ustad urdu hain..' 'aur pandit, sanskrit', i completed his sentence. he agreed with what i said.
I announced this to the crowd and pointed a finger at the punjabi.
Many agreed, but for the bond.
He said,' Hey, i don't think so. I think it is an adjective of some kind. See, we say 'wah ustad wah', you know that?
Whatever he thought an adjective was, i said, 'ya,you are praising the guru by saying so'.
He shook his head and re-iterated,' Somehow I think it doesn't mean what you say, it must be an adjective'.
A whole lot of swears gushed from somewhere and danced on my tongue. I didn't let them go out, though. I contained myself for a moment. Meanwhile, my mind got busy with some thought:
'copernicus had none to agree with him, i have atleast a few. and moreover the idea is not my own. if he could shake his head, and smile at people, i could atleast keep quiet.'
"its hot these days na?" i remarked, looking at no one in particular..
